General information about the town of Catral
Location
Catral is a small village with 5209 inhabitants with a climate which is warm all year round. The people who live here are called “catraleneses” or “catralenos”. Catral is situated in the province of Alicante and the area is “Vega Baja del Segura”. Catral is 45km from Alicante/Murcia and roughly 20km from Guardamar del Segura. Torrevieja is approximately 25km, Orihuela 16km, Elche and Crevillente 20km. Moreover with the motorway (A-37) and the main road (A-7) you are able to get to Murcia and Alicante in 25 minutes, and Torrevieja in 15 minutes. Catral has a railway station in San Isidro (3km). Nearby is the airport of “Altet” which is only 20 minutes drive away. Catral is very famous for agriculture because of its rich soils, and the warm climate, which produces extraordinary products: cereals, oranges, lemons, artichokes and sunflowers.

Local Amenities
Catral has a General Medical Centre which is open everyday of the week. There are two nearby general hospitals (Orihuela and Elche), chemists, local police station, petrol station, schools and supermarkets.
Close to Catral there is a wonderful natural park “El Hondo”. The park has a variety of animals and fish along with beautiful gardens which will appeal to all nature lovers.
You can also enjoy the numerous parks, sports centres, flight centre, library and two shopping centres which are situated in Elche and Torrevieja.
History
Catral dates back to Iberian times. The Moslems ruled these lands and it was called “Al-Qatrullat” (Catral). In the century XIII, the Moslems stopped ruling and afterwards, it was ruled by “Santiago” who ruled Catral and Callosa in 1255. In 1741 Catral was declared Real Villa by “Felipe V” .
For people who love architecture, Catral has a wide variety of historical buildings of interest. “Santos Juanes” church was originally visigothic. From 1790 to 1802 it was converted into a neoclassical church. “La Ermita de la Purisima” dates back from the XVI century and “La Ermita de Santa Agueda” was built at the end of the XVII century.
Local Events
Catral is a very bustling town with numerous festivals that occur all year round. On the 4th and 5th of February is the pilgrimage of “Santa Agueda” (one of the most ancient of Valencia). On the 24th of June is the festival of the Patron Saint “San Juan Bautista”. On the 8th of December is the festival in honour of the “Purisima” (Patron Saint of Catral).
The “gastronomy” that Catral has to offer is amazing. Dishes range from tasty rices, vegetable dishes, stews and homemade meatballs. Desserts are typical to the area such as almond cakes, almond tarts and a speciality to the area called “Almojabenas” which is a must to taste.
